Essential Question: How do the police profile a killer?

As someone who grew up a lover of crime shows, one of my favorites was Criminal Minds. In the shows that FBI profiling killers and it leads them to an arrest. In order to profile a killer the police have to analyze every tiny detail, nothing is insignificant. If they are not spot on it can throw off the whole case and lead them the wrong way. When I was reading Serial Killers and Mass Murderers by Niguel Cawthorne, I found it interesting to read profiles of the infamous serial killers and how it works.

Within reading, I learned how profiling truly works. When the police or FBI goes to investigate a crime scene, that is where they begin their profile, they carefully analyze it in a very complex way. They pick up on small clues the killer leaves that may seem to have no significance to an average person, but in actuality it helps them create a profile. For example, the investigators will analyze the way a victim's body is left. Killers who have remorse may dress up a body or position it in a certain way, versus someone who dumps a body with no care. Seeing whether or not a killer shows remorse or not reveals as lot about their psychological state. People who do not show remorse are psychopaths who will continue to ruthlessly kill, and those who do not may be suffering from psychotic, meaning they are disconnected from reality. As well as this, they observe the body to see if there was sexual assault, torture, over-kill, and more. That gives them an idea about the pattern of the killer, their possible mental state and their preferred method. Along with the psychological part, they analyze the forensic aspects to see if that will give them a definitive answer as to who is responsible. They look into the victims of a killer, because usually killers have a "type," meaning they pick certain people who look a certain way. Some killers may target a certain age group, race, even sometimes as specific as hair color. This usually reveals past trauma or issues. For example, serial rapist and killer Ted Bundy chose college age women, who very closely resembled an ex-girlfriend he had who broke up with him. It is speculated he took out his anger on his ex-girlfriend on random innocent women. Looking into the victims may lead the investigators to a motive and then to killer. Profiling is a very amazing tactic to putting vicious killers behind bars and it is personally something I am interested in pursuing later in my life.
