Essential Question: How does a person survive after suffering extreme abuse?

Jaycee Dugard is now a thirty-eight year old woman who was held captive for eighteen years. In captivity she suffered unimaginable sexual abuse by a man named Philip Garrido. He kidnapped her when she was eleven and raped her daily. She was finally found after giving birth to two daughters. In the book Freedom (a sequel to A Stolen Life) by Dugard, she talks about her life and how she lives after her horrific abuse.

While reading Dugard's memoir, I learned that the only way to move on from trauma was by having a positive attitude and letting the past go. After she was found by police, she had lost eighteen years of her life to being held in a shed where she was sexually abused. Pregnant at thirteen years old then again when she was seventeen, giving birth to children fathered by her abuser. Dugard writes this book in such a positive light, showing that she is living her best life. She shows that it is possible to be happy, even after being abused in the worst way possible. But the only way to do that is by changing your own outlook. I have personally suffered from depression, anxiety and other mental disorders for a majority of my life. I know in comparison to Dugard's story, my problems are nothing, but I found her message applies to even smaller issues. She shows that happiness is up to oneself. I have realized throughout my own ordeal that nobody can change the way I feel. The only way to move on from one's past issues is to have the will to be positive and want to get better. Throughout the book, Dugard makes it abundantly clear that to heal, it begins with positivity and accepting you can not dwell on the past. It is okay to feel pain and let it be a part of you, but she has chosen not to give her captors one more minute of her life after they took eighteen years of it. Everyone should use her as an example of a person. She is grateful for everyday and only goal is to live her best life.
