Why I Chose My Topic:

I have aspired to become a detective or a prosecutor since I was a little girl, idolizing the people who put vicious criminals behind bars. I grew up watching crime shows, interviews starring convicted killers, and even pretending to solve cases in my backyard. Last year, I took Psychology which made me even more interested in what goes on in a criminal's mind, and what leads them to the horrific acts they commit. I believe law and criminal justice may be my passion, and this class gave me a perfect opportunity to learn more about one of my favorite topics. 


Essential Questions:

What psychological problems lead someone to commit heinous acts?
How effective is our criminal justice system?
What can our government change to avoid gun violence?
How does a person function after surviving extreme abuse?
How do police profile a killer?
What does it take to be a criminal investigator?
What are the steps in a missing person's investigation?

Serial Killers and Mass Murderers by Niguel Cawthorne Finished book: 327 pages The beginning of the book, Serial Killers and Mass Murderers, the author raises thought-provoking questions on the serious topic of murder. He argues that we are never safe from vicious killers, no matter what. His bluntness drew me in, so I chose a quote that I found very compelling. "Then again we are all potential victims. You are not even safe in your own home (most murders occur within families) or on the streets even in broad daylight (there could be a sniper on the roof intent on killing whoever steps into their sights)" (Cawthorne 2). This quote is very straightforward, showing the reality of how easy it is for a deranged person to take a life. He makes a point that you could be targeted in your own home, or just be in the wrong place at the wrong time and be killed. Essential Question: What role do drugs play in violence?       Unsurprisingly, a lot of serial killers were/ are avid drug users. Drugs make a lot of people violent, but for people with murderous desires it seems to send them over the edge and increase delusions. There is a huge drug problem that seems to be taking over the world at this point. It is a huge problem and is getting worse daily. In reading Serial Killers and Mass Murderers by Niguel Cawthorne, I learned that one of the most infamous killers named Charles Manson used LSD that enhanced his already demented mind, and Jeffrey Dahmer drank heavily and may have used other drugs. I began to wonder if drugs and alcohol had  a link to serial killers and their behaviors. I did some research and found that drug and alcohol abuse does in fact make people more violent.
